Condition

Hypothyroidism

You are tired in a way sleep does not fix, gaining weight you cannot explain, cold, foggy, losing hair, and somewhere along the way you were probably told a single normal TSH means your thyroid is fine. A normal TSH is not a thyroid investigation. Your symptoms are real data, and they deserve the whole picture. This is educational information, not a diagnosis.

Overview

What this looks like

What it is, the common signs, and when it is worth investigating.

Hypothyroidism means the thyroid is underactive, so the body runs short on the hormones that set your metabolism, energy, temperature, and mood. When that happens, the symptoms are easy to feel and easy to wave away as stress, anxiety, or just getting older, even though something measurable is going on.

Here is what often gets missed: TSH is a signal from the brain, not a direct measure of the active hormone reaching your cells, and its normal range is built on population averages rather than on how a person is meant to function. A lone normal TSH can sit inside that range while you still feel hypothyroid, which is why we read the full panel, including Free T3, Free T4, and antibodies, in the context of your symptoms and history. Optimal, not normal.

It is worth investigating when your symptoms line up with an underactive thyroid and the explanations you have been given never quite added up, especially if no one has looked past that one number. The point is to connect the dots, not to chase a different number.
